2 Physical Signs You Need To Replace Your Car's Battery As Soon As Possible

by Ana King

As long as you can start your car and power your vehicle's electronic peripherals, you may believe that the battery is still in good condition. You may not worry about it until you have trouble turning over the engine or notice that the lights start dimming.

However, even if the battery is still keeping a charge, it may not continue to do so if there are physical problems with it. Below are a couple of physical signs you should periodically check for that indicate the need to replace your car's battery as soon as possible.

1. Exterior Case Has Warped Because the Battery Is Swelling and Bulging Out

One physical sign you should be mindful of when checking your vehicle's battery to see if it needs to be replaced is the warping of the exterior case. While examining the battery, you may find that it appears swollen with the sides bulging out.

When a battery overheats because of overcharging, it releases hydrogen gas that builds up inside because it is unable to escape. When combined with the intense heat of the engine, the gas will break down the battery and cause it to swell. Since a warped case is an indicator that the interior of the battery is damaged, you should replace it as soon as you notice any bulging.

2. Excessive White Corrosion Constantly Builds Up Around the Battery's Terminals

Another sign that your car's battery should be replaced sooner rather than later is the presence of excessive white, powdery corrosion around the terminals. While some corrosion is normal as the battery ages, it can be easily cleaned off before it interferes with the terminals' connections.

However, if the corrosion keeps returning or the buildup happens quickly, the sulfuric acid inside the battery that helps it keep an electrical charge has started to leak out. Without this sulfuric acid, the battery will fail and should be replaced.

If the exterior of your car's battery is warped and bulging because it has started to swell or constantly has new corrosion appearing on the terminals, it may not work properly for much longer. Before long, you will start having problems starting and running your car because the battery will not be able to maintain a charge. Before this happens, contact an auto service that offers car batteries in your area to speak with a representative who can assist you with choosing a replacement.
