What You Need To Know About Windshield Repair And Replacement

by Ana King

Whether it's a rock chip or a crack, it's not a good idea to ignore a damaged windshield. Prompt repair will ensure your safety and may minimize damage to the glass.

Repair Vs. Replace

A damaged windshield doesn't always require replacement. In the case of small rock chips or very short cracks, it may be possible to repair them. Your glass service will inject a clear epoxy into the damage to fill it, then buff it smooth for maximum clarity.

Replacement is necessary for larger cracks and rock chips, especially those that are near the edge of the windshield. It's also better to replace the windshield if the damage is directly in the driver's line of sight, as repaired glass can cause slight distortions that can inhibit the driver's main sight lines — particularly under glares at night.

Payment Choices

Your auto insurance policy may cover glass repair or even replacement. Coverage types vary, with some policies providing free chip repairs or a reduced deductible for glass repairs, and others requiring your full deductible before covering any repairs.

If your insurance covers auto glass, check with your policyholder to find out your options. Some provide coverage at specific repair centers, allowing the repair center to direct bill insurance so you pay nothing out of pocket. Other policies allow you to take your car to any shop you like, and then they will later reimburse you for the cost.

Service Options

A repair can be done while you wait, as it rarely takes more than a half hour to complete. Replacement can take up to a full day, as the glass adhesives and seals must be given some time to cure before you drive the car. If you take your car into a shop, they may keep it onsite and parked in a covered area for a longer period during inclement weather, as moisture and cold can slow curing time.

There is also the option of a mobile glass service. The technician comes to you to perform the repair or replacement, which saves you time and hassle. For example, you can have the repair completed in the parking lot of your job while you are at work. Depending on the weather, you may need a covered parking area in order to use a mobile service.

After Care

After care, following the replacement is relatively simple. The seals will likely be taped when you get the car back, and you should wait at least a day before removing the tape. Use a bit more caution when driving for the first day or so, as sudden stops or anything else that puts pressure on the glass can affect curing. Also, avoid car washes or washing the windshield during this period.

If possible, avoid parking in exposed areas, especially if rain or other inclement weather is expected. Furthermore, don't park beneath trees or anywhere else where items can fall on the windshield while it is still in the 24-hour curing period.
