Signs Your Vehicle Needs Transmission Repair

by Ana King

When your vehicle has a bad transmission, the transmission should be promptly repaired. You may even need to have the vehicle towed to a transmission repair shop. Thus, you should know how to recognize the signs that a vehicle's transmission requires repair. Here are some of the most notable signs.

Difficulty Switching Gears

Your vehicle might periodically have difficulty switching gears when going up or down a steep hill, for high inclines are demanding on all types of cars and trucks. Your vehicle shouldn't regularly have problems switching gears, however, and it certainly shouldn't be hard to change gears when driving on flat roads.

If your vehicle regularly has difficulty switching gears, the transmission is likely malfunctioning. Switching gears is the primary job of the transmission, and it's the main part that handles gear switches. Thus, difficulty is perhaps the clearest sign that the transmission needs some sort of repair.

You might notice difficulty switching between any gears, or it might be between specific gears. If it's only between specific gears, the problem should reoccur each time you reach a certain speed on a flat road. Gear changes occur at fairly set speeds if the road is flat.

Slipping Gears

Slipping gears is essentially the opposite of having difficulty switching gears. When gears slip, they change because the vehicle is having difficulty maintaining a certain gear.

You might notice the engine rev, delayed acceleration, sudden and unexpected gear changes, or strange noises if your vehicle's gears slip. As is true with difficulty changing gears, slipping can occur with all gears or with specific gears. Specific gear slipping will usually occur at the same speed on flat roads.

Any slipping gears are another definitive sign that something is amiss with the transmission, and the vehicle should immediately be checked by a transmission repair shop.

Burning Smell Under the Hood

Any number of issues could potentially cause a burning smell. For example, a stuck brake caliper might cause excess heat and a burning smell in one wheel well. If you notice a burning smell coming from the engine compartment, though, it's likely not a brake. It's probably something under the hood—and that could be the transmission.

You should promptly have your vehicle checked by a knowledgeable mechanic whenever you notice a burning smell, for overheating can ruin an engine block or transmission. A transmission repair shop will be able to determine whether the burning smell is caused by the transmission or something else.
