Keeping Your Vehicle In Great Condition

Hi there, my name is Nellie. Welcome to my site. I am excited to share my knowledge about automotive service on this site. I would like to help everyone learn about how to keep their cars and trucks in excellent condition over the years. My site will cover all of the different maintenance and repair tasks required by vintage and modern vehicles. I will talk about the tools and safety equipment you must use for each task. I hope you can use the information on my site to keep your vehicle well-maintained and running great. Thank you for your visit.

Add Performance To The Diesel Engine In Your Truck

by Ana King

If you drive a truck with a performance engine but want to increase engine performance and power output, there are some options. The standard diesel engine produces a lot of horsepower, but significant increases are possible with the right parts and accessories for your truck.

Engine Tuners

One of the easiest ways to unlock potential horsepower in diesel engines is to invest in an inexpensive emissions-compliant tuner that will change some engine ECM settings (engine control manager). The increase with a tuner can be limited because they will only allow you to make so many changes, but if you replace the ECM with a performance model simultaneously, the gains can be a huge increase in horsepower on some engines.

Several different companies manufacture tuners and ECMs for performance engines but do some research to find the one that is best for your driving style and situation. These units often differ in ways that make one model better for someone driving on the highway a lot versus a truck driven around town more.

Cold Air Intake Systems

Adding a cold air intake to your performance engine can add some additional power by increasing the clean airflow into the engine. The restrictions that exist in the factory air intake create turbulence in the system, but many aftermarket cold air intake systems remove those restrictions to allow better airflow.

The air is drawn into the system from a new location to allow cooler air, which helps increase the density of the air-fuel mix going into the engine. This denser mix means more compression and more power in the cylinders and at the rear wheels. The cold air systems may also use a washable air filter that is less restrictive and lowers maintenance costs because you can wash and reuse the filter many times.

Performance Exhaust Systems

Replacing the restrictive exhaust system on your performance engine is another way to add some horsepower to the engine. Using a tuner and air intake and putting a turbo-back exhaust on your diesel engine can complete a trifecta that will start to produce engine performance by a lot of horsepower without breaking the bank.

Often the cost of these exhaust systems is not unreasonable, and they can be installed at home with basic hand tools, saving you the cost of installation. You may need to adjust the tune of the engine further and in some situations, removing some emissions controls is necessary to check if you can legally do that in your area before going to this extreme with your truck.
