3 Reasons Your Car Smells And What You Can Do About It

by Ana King

For most people, your vehicle is your second home. With so much time spent inside, it's not unheard of for a vehicle to sometimes have an unpleasant odor. This isn't the best-case scenario, but sometimes it's hard to determine exactly what the smell is, which makes it difficult to get rid of. With a little investigation, you might be able to locate the odor and work to eliminate it.

Worn Carpet

Carpet takes a great deal of abuse. The bottom of your shoes come in contact with a number of not-so-pleasant substances throughout the day, many of which carry odors. When you're late and grab a bite to eat on the way to work, the remnants from your meal can end up in your car.

After an intense workout, some of sweat can end up trickling down to your carpet. The point is that carpet can contain many unpleasantries that can lead to odor. If you've had your vehicle for a while and you are experiencing some odors, consider a carpet kit to replace the carpet and eliminate the smell. Contact a company like Rich's Custom Upholstery to learn more.

Dirty Filter

When you turn on the AC or heat in your vehicle, air is extracted from the outside, passed through a filter and is eventually cooled or heated before it makes its way into the cabin. All these impurities, including excess moisture, dirt and pollen get trapped inside the filter.

When left to fester, it's not uncommon for a musty or mildew-like smell to develop. Each time you turn on your cooling system and the air passes through the filter, this smell will be forced inside the cabin. Make it a habit of changing the filter when it is clogged to avoid this scenario.

Failing Battery

The battery is one of the most important lifelines in a vehicle. When the battery fails, you aren't going anywhere. If you are recognizing an unpleasant odor, a failing battery could be the culprit. This is particularly the case when it comes to a rotten egg smell.

A battery that has an internal short, has been overcharged, or has been exposed to extreme temperatures, like harsh cold, can start to emit a gas that smells like rotten eggs. If you notice this scent, the battery may not have failed yet, but it likely won't be long.

Don't let an awful smell take over your vehicle. Whether it's replacing the carpet with a carpet kit, installing a new filter, or getting a new battery, get to the source of the smell.
