Traveling For The Holidays? 4 Tips To Make Sure Your Car Is Prepared

by Ana King

If you're going to be taking a road trip, part of the plans should include ensuring that your car is properly prepared. This is particularly true if you're traveling into regions where cold weather – including ice and snow – are expected. To make sure you and your car are prepared, here are four steps you should take to get your car ready for your road trip.

Make Sure You Have Roadside Assistance

If you're going to be traveling across country this winter, make sure your road side assistance policy is current. Before you head out for holiday travels, contact your insurance company and make sure that your policy includes roadside assistance. If it doesn't, make sure you add it to your coverage before you head out.

Change Your Windshield Wipers

If you live in a region that's been experiencing drought conditions, your windshield wipers probably haven't been getting much use. Unfortunately, that means that they could be suffering from rot, which means they could fall apart the first time you try to use them. Now that you're planning your winter travels, make sure you have your windshield wipers changed. It's also a good idea to check the levels on your windshield washer fluids. Be sure that you add washer fluid that contains a defrosting agent. This will ensure that you can get rid of the ice that builds up on your windshield.

Inspect Your Floor Mats

If you've decided to install new floor mats before taking off on your vacation, make sure they're installed correctly. This might not seem like a safety concern, but it is. If your floor mats aren't properly secured, they could slide out of place while you're driving. Unfortunately, if your floor mat slides under your gas or brake pedals, it could cause a serious safety risk.

Have Your Tires Checked

If you're going to be driving in ice, heavy rains, or snow, you need to have your tires checked before you embark on your holiday travels. This is particularly true if the tread on your current tires are beginning to wear thin. Have your mechanic look at the tires on your car. If the tread is wearing thin, have them replaced before you leave for vacation.

Don't take chances this winter. Before you head out for your holiday road trips, use the tips provided here to help prevent emergency situations.  For assistance, talk to a professional like P & T Automotive Repair.
